How to prepare General Intelligence & Reasoning Section for SSC CHSL Tier-I exam

After recently released notification by SSC on the syllabus of SSC CHSL 2019 exam, it is observed that the section of General Intelligence & Reasoning Section constitutes 25% of the total score in Tier-I exam. This section carries 25 multiple choice questions and will be of 50 marks. Each question will carry 2 marks and 0.50 marks will be deducted as penalty for every wrong answer. This section can be broadly divided into sections- Verbal Reasoning and Non Verbal Reasoning sections.

The Verbal Reasoning section carries more significance as around 66% of questions are asked from it. The topics of Verbal Reasoning are Series, Ranks, Direction, Arrangement, Coding, Decoding, Analogy and Classification/Odd Pair, Syllogism and Statement Conclusion. On the other hand, Non-Verbal Reasoning section covers the rest of 34% questions and questions are asked from the topics of Figure Formation, Dice, Triangle, Rule Detection, Images, Completion of Pattern, Mirror Images, Figure Matrix and Paper Folding, etc. After scrutinizing and examining both these sections, we can list out the topics from which questions are asked.

The topics are Semantic Analogy, Symbolic operations, Symbolic/Number Analogy, Trends, Figural Analogy, Space Orientation ,Semantic Classification, Venn Diagrams, Symbolic/ Number Classification, Drawing inferences, Figural Classification, Punched hole/ pattern-folding & unfolding , Semantic Series, Figural Pattern – folding and completion, Number Series, Embedded figures, Figural Series, Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, Emotional Intelligence, Word Building, Social Intelligence, Coding and de-coding, Other sub-topics, if any Numerical operations.

Now, let us discuss the preparation tips in detail:-

1. The topic of Coding-Decoding principally judges the student’s ability of decipher the code language. The given question will be in a form of word and a coded form of word where students are required to decode the logic behind the coding. To find the solution in the form of code, they have to apply the same logic to another given word.

2. In Logical reasoning segment, the questions from Seating Arrangements will be very important. The other popular and significant topics are Puzzles, Ranking, Blood Relations and Direction Sense. The understanding of direction sense is difficult but still you have to master it to solve the questions.
